Romain Cools is active for more than 25 years in the Belgian, European and global potato sector.
He started his career as secretary general of Belgapom, the Belgian potato trade and processing industry in 1991. Since then he has been involved in the development of the European potato sector in which he was secretary general of Europatat (European potato trade) and UEITP/EUPPA (European potato processing industry) for respectively 15 and 7 years. He is also co-founder of Vegaplan, the Belgian quality and sustainability scheme of the plant sector and took the initiative to launch the guidelines for the Belgian potato, fruit and vegetables trade and processing sector. Both of them are validated by the Belgian food safety agency and are also interchangeable with Dutch and German quality schemes or private schemes.
Since 2018 he became president / CEO of the World Potato Congress inc., an NGO which aims to be a premier network organization for the global potato sector. He took the initiative to set up partnerships with partners in the developing world to set up potato value chains, which has resulted in the WPC toolbox.
He took the initiative to set up the research project ‘Ipot’, which has resulted in WatchITgrow, a remote sensing platform for the Belgian potato chain, with follow up of the potato fields via satellite.
