Gábor Figeczky is the Head of Global Policy at IFOAM - Organics International. The global umbrella organization for organic agriculture movements is advocating for a change towards truly sustainable agriculture and food systems by showcasing how agricultural systems based on the principles of health, ecology, fairness and care can address hunger, nutrition, energy consumption, pollution, climate change, inequity and the depletion of natural resources in a holistic manner. Gábor is leading the planning and implementation of the organization’s global advocacy activities on sustainable agriculture and food systems, nutrition, biodiversity and climate change, with a particular focus on UN processes and institutions. He coordinates farmers’ representation in the UN Environment Major Groups Facilitating Committee and acts as the organizing partner for the Farmers’ Major Group for the HLPF on Sustainable Development. He is engaged in the work of the One Planet Network Sustainable Food Systems Programme Multistakeholder Advisory Committee as well as the Farmers Constituency in the UNFCCC and various FAO-lead processes. Gábor has been promoting agro-ecology as a viable solution that can deliver results on all the SDGs for 20 years. With a background in agriculture and ecology, he has worked in nature conservation and sustainable agriculture at senior positions in the civil society as well as the state sector including as CEO of WWF Hungary. He has expertise in designing biodiversity-friendly agri-environmental schemes and evaluating rural development programmes and reports from the national to the global level. He is the author of and have contributed to various reports, brochures and articles on sustainable agriculture and its linkages to climate change and biodiversity, the marketing of local farming goods and the use of the European Union’s rural development funds.
